Florida Aeropress Competition

Aeropress Competition

Last Thursday was a pretty eventful day. With meetings at local roasters and then the very first Florida Aeropress Competition taking place at Coppertail Brewing in Ybor City.

First, Coppertail Brewing was an amazing host for the event. If you like craft beer and have never been, you need to go. It is a huge facility and their tasting room was just finished only a couple months back. It’s obvious they spared no expense when building this place and it truly is a site to see in itself. They are still pretty new so the beer is just ok but they are getting there.

Now on to the coffee part…

The folks over at Commune & Co. put on this event and pulled in some great participating sponsors. No corporate stuff but contributing members to the coffee community. Small businesses just like us. So it was neat to see people from different cafes, coffee shops and roasters all come together under one roof for this event. It really put on display the camaraderie that exists in the coffee world because ultimately we all have the same goal, to produce great coffee. It was an eclectic mix of people from all over the state and it made for a really great atmosphere and event.

The competition was quite the spectacle. It was a single elimination bracket style event with 18 competitors. They went off in groups of 3 with 8 minutes to produce the best cup possible. At the end of 8 minutes their cups were turned over to 3 judges with only 1 winner emerging from the group.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to taste the coffee but every competitor ground their beans fresh so it smelled amazing in the room. It was apparent that everyones taste preferences were all over the board because there really wasn’t one type of coffee that the competitors were using. The local roasters used their own stuff but the barista competitors had coffees from roasters all over the country and beans from different parts of the world.

In the end we flat out had a good time connecting with the local coffee community. We learned about some new roasters and new shops that we will be writing about very soon. Also, we are really looking forward to the next event and possibly even competing 😉 Check out a few pictures we took below

Til next time,
